GRAFLEX...ppass
(Portable Passive Acquisition Surveillance System)

P.P.A.S.S.

The PPASS (Portable Passive Acquisition Surveillance System) is a fully portable, turnkey medium range surveillance package which offers superb (image intensified) night and day performance and will provide years of trouble-free operation under the harshest of operating conditions.

The PPASS is designed to offer the ultimate in portability, versatility, durability, and performance. The primary user groups of the PPASS would include but are not limited to Special Forces/Operations, Border Patrol and Immigration, and anti-Drug Enforcement Agencies. Finally, the PPASS can be modified to meet most customer requirements or purchased as separate components to satisfy a particular application.

The basic PPASS components include the sensor, the control box, power & control cables, pan & tilt, and a tripod. The primary feature of the PPASS system is the INTENSICON* relay lens assembly which is a sub-component of the sensor and allows for the use of a single objective (zoom) lens for both night and day viewing; a detail of the INTENSICON* concept is found below. The clever design of the INTENSICON* includes a motorized 3X by 1X extender through the channel which will triple the basic focal length of the zoom lens. Another trademark feature of the PPASS is the inclusion of a contrast enhancer providing a dramatic increase in image clarity and picture quality of low contrast targets. Finally, a selectable video averager removes image deficiencies such as photon noise (associated with image intensified systems), low signal noise, and heat scintillation.

Night Channel

Objective lens (Cat Zoom or 12X) {A} passes 1" format image (16mm) into INTENSICON dual channel relay. Light sensing diode {B} checks for light level and allows or disallows user to switch from day to night channel. If allowed to switch to night channel, user manually activates sliding mirror {C} out of optical path allowing image and 100% of light energy to pass through intensifier {D}. Intensifier {D} image 1" (16mm) output is then transferred via a .33X high efficiency relay lens {E} to a wide spectral band sensitivity 1/3" format chip camera. As this is happening the photo diode {B} output signal will activate the intensifier {D} and the night chip camera {F} and deactivate the day chip camera {J}.

Day Channel

Day channel operation is manually activated by the operator. Upon activation, the mirror {C} slides into optical path thereby diverting the full 1" (16mm) format image downward 90 degrees into the day channel and then through the relay lens {G}. The image is then reflected 90 degrees via the fixed mirror {H} into the 1X by 3X motorized lens assembly {I} which also acts as a .33X optical image reducer. When activated, the 1X by 3X motorized lens assembly (I) flips to the alternative position. As the day channel is activated a signal activates the day chip camera {J} and deactivates the intensifier {D} and the night chip camera {F}.

The PPASS sensor includes a motorized zoom lens, the INTENSICON* relay lens assembly, and night (monochrome) and day (color) high-resolution cameras all integrated within a sealed & purged environmental housing. The manufacturer can integrate most 18mm image intensifier tubes into the PPASS sensor package but export restrictions may govern the availability based upon the type/performance/generation of the tube and the end-user country. Further, numerous camera options are available – contact factory for details.

The PPASS control box is fully weatherproofed and ruggedized, and allows for full control of the sensor package, as well as, the optional pan & tilt. The control box is constructed of HPDE and is extremely durable. All control switches and dials are completely sealed and mil specification. The control panel is anodized aluminum and all control function descriptions are engraved into the panel. The plugs/sockets and cables (for control and power functions) are mil specification. The control box, as in most PPASS components, can be customized to meet customer requirements. The control box also houses and allows for control of the high-resolution, sunlight readable LCD , the video averager, and the contrast enhancer.

The PPASS optional pan & tilt and tripod are manufactured in the USA and their design has recorded years of trouble free service in harsh military environments.
